Amy Lowell Poetry Traveling Scholarship Funds a Year Abroad for Poets

The Will of American poet Amy Lowell, who died in 1925, established an annual scholarship to support travel abroad for gifted American-born poets. The Amy Lowell Poetry Traveling Scholarship is administered by the Trustees under her will at the law firm of Choate, Hall & Stewart in Boston, Massachusetts.

Poets are not required to have published their work in order to be eligible for this scholarship. There are no specific age requirements for scholarship recipients, nor do they have to be enrolled in an educational program.

Those interested in being considered for this award must submit the scholarship poetry contest application form, which can be found online, along with samples of original poetry in duplicate. Applicants may choose to submit 40 types pages of their poetry, or a printed volume of their own work accompanied by 20 additional typed pages of recent work. Entrants are also encouraged to submit resumes.

Applications must be received by October 15 each year, and are reviewed by the selection committee. As specified in Lowell's will, the committee consists of a member of Harvard University's English department faculty, two recognized poets, and the trustees. Poetry scholarship recipients are notified in February.
